56th Annual South African Society for Animal Science (SASAS) Congress

Date: 7th – 9th July 2026.

Location: Cape Town, South Africa.

The main theme of this Congress is ‘Gearing Up: Animal Science and Beyond’ and focuses on livestock innovations in nutrition, genetics, and sustainable agriculture.

The 2026 Congress theme, ‘Gearing Up: Animal Science and Beyond’, reflects the dynamic interconnections between animal science and the broader agricultural landscape. Like gears in a complex system, animal scientists drive progress through advances in nutrition, genetics, reproduction, physiology, health, and product science – each cog turning in harmony with others across the agricultural value chain.

This Congress invites participants to explore how animal science interfaces with allied disciplines and emerging technologies, to strengthen the links between research, production, policy, and society.

By gearing up together, we move beyond disciplinary silos toward a more resilient, integrated, and forward-looking agricultural future.

Professor Mizeck Chagunda, Director of the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health (CTLGH) will be attending this Congress.

Professor Chagunda’s core research addresses the biological and economic efficiencies of tropical breeding. At the Congress, his insights will map directly onto the event’s theme ‘Gearing Up: Animal Science and Beyond’ by demonstrating how advanced data science and genetics can build livestock herds capable of resisting disease and adapting to changing environments.

As  a Keynote Speaker, Professor Chagunda will present ‘Innovative genomic solutions to define genotypes for disease resistance, adaptation resilience and enteric methane emissions’.
