Dairy Genomics
The Dairy Genomics programme, in partnership with the African Dairy Genetic Gains project, facilitates the application of genomics to dairy production in the tropics for increased cattle productivity and a more sustainable environment.
Featured projects
Capturing Genetic Diversity in African Livestock
A collaboration between CTLGH and numerous African partners has established one of the largest genomic reference resource for African cattle to date.
Developing Affordable Tests for Breed Composition of Cattle
CTLGH researchers are working to develop a cost effective test to identify breed composition and help dairy farmers across Africa make informed breeding decisions.
Integrating with International Genomic Evaluation Pipelines
Collation and analysis of genomic data from African dairy cows and their international sires will help predict performance traits.
Selective Breeding of Dairy Cattle
This short video clip, Better Cows Better Grades, and the accompanying story, commissioned by our main funder the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, illustrates the impact our selective breeding work is having on milk production in Kenya. Milk is known as ‘White Gold’ in Africa. The additional income generated by more productive cows is helping smallholder farmers, such as Josephine Kimonyi, pay for their children’s education.
